uganda: story of ‘grace’

By January 19, 2010Blog

I have so much to tell you, but little time… While in the Gulu District, a strong Internet connection has been hard to find.

After flying to Gulu, our first stop was to World Vision’s “Children of War” program.

I don’t even know where to begin.

A Short History

In 1986, a group in Uganda began fighting the Ugandan government, threatening a coup. For almost twenty years, they fought, wreaking fear, death, and calamity on much of Uganda as well as surrounding nations. Their weapons? Guns, indoctrination, and children.

Thousands of children.

Eight to thirteen-year-old children.

Children they would abduct, “reprogram” with their philosophies and doctrines, and then proclaim as their “own.”

Many of the children were raped. Most of the boys were taught to kill–sometimes they killed strangers, sometimes they killed family members.

And sometimes, years after being abducted, they escaped…

Then, beginning in 1995, more than 14,000 of those children–ages 9 to 22–began finding hope when they walked through these gates…
Sometimes they come needing medical attention…
(This 17-year-old walked in with two gunshot wounds in the back of his leg).
Sometimes the children come carrying their own babies…
Every one of them come needing to find hope, healing, and restoration…
And that’s what happens here at World Vision’s “Children of War” project…

 THEN… I met Grace and Odang…

For fives years, Grace was taken from her family… now, because of World Vision, she’s free, finished college, and helping young women in her community find their voice.
Odang came in with three gunshot wounds in the legs and back… he was abducted for 11 years…
and today, he’s 21…
This is hardly all of the story…
But I’m out of time.
