paperback ‘churched’ gets a new cover

By November 15, 2009Blog

When it releases in paperback on June 15, 2010, Churched will sport a new cover. This was a surprise to me, but changing a hardback’s cover when it releases in paperback is a trend in publishing right now. Here are just a few of the books that received paperback makeovers…

Jesus Land: A Memoir

Dry: A Memoir

Hundreds of books have gone through cover changes when transitioning from hardback to paperback, and since Churched is my only hardback, I have no firsthand knowledge of how this will work. I know this rarely happens in the Christian publishing world, though I know Rob Bell’s Velvet Elvis made the switch. So we shall see… I’d just like to see the book make it into airport bookstores! And Target. 🙂
And yes, the content shall remain the same.

Eh, it kinda looks like a school book. Like a book to teach teachers on how to deal with mischievous children… I guess it goes with the topic… It’s missing an apple.

  • Yeah, it’s still growing on me. Not sure what I think about it yet. Definitely like the original cover better…

    🙂

  • It looks like Macaulay Culkin when he was a kid…kind of…or Dennis the Menace–Christian version.

  • Meg says:

I definitely like the previous cover better. You don’t get any say in that kind of change?

  • gitz says:

I had no idea people did that… I guess the reason I like the first one better is because the cover matches your tone… and I liked that the cover for Hear No Evil was an extension of the first one.

Not that your publishers care what I think, but thought I’d share anyway 🙂

  • I gotta say I agree, I like the original Dennis the Menace kind of look. More human and approachable in the cover. (Recently connected with you at twitter, and was just checking out your website and wanted to give you some comment luv. Nice book btw.)

    I like both.

John Green’s “Papers Town” also changed covers when it came out in paper back. Basically, they’re trying to make it look like a different book so they can sell more copies. Capitalism, ftl.

  • Nathan says:

so how much of the royalties goes to the photographer of the new cover?

  • Chad Estes says:

It looks like it could be the same boy from the hardbound, but now we see the top half of his face and the setting. I love that he is in an old, wooden pew looking backwards and that the front of the church is blurred.

The first cover is great, but this one is a win too.

    i’m partial to the original.
