jesus picture of the week!

By August 25, 2009Blog

First of all, I want to say this: The artist who painted this picture is good/talented. And when I first saw it, I was compelled to let myself be moved by it.

But then I thought, “How realistic is this photo?”

Jesus is getting ready to be nailed to a cross, but right before that happens, he takes a moment and sits on the cross in a position that is.. uh… unlike the kind of position that somebody would be sitting in if he were getting ready to die for the sins of the world.

To me he’s sitting like somebody who’s getting ready to apply sunscreen on his legs or maybe bug repellent because it appears to be night time. The cross is like his beach towel, a comfortable place to just sit.

And of course…
-His robe shimmers.
-His legs look muscular and relatively unharmed by the brutal beating he’s undergone.
-And uh, is that a moon behind Jesus’s head?

Again, I appreciate the artist’s attempt to capture a moment that, sure, might have happened… it just seems unlikely…

Viagra is for the treatment of inability to get or keep an erection and similar states when erection is of low quality. When you buy remedies like cialis from canada you should know about cialis online canada. It may have a lot of brands, but only one ATC Code. • I don’t believe the artist was attempting to create a historically accurate image. I feel this piece teaches the power of surrendering yourself. I like this piece.

Not to knock the Savior or even the artist, but this looks like a picture someone addicted to WoW would produce. It’s so cheesy. If it was pixalated like old school Mario Bros, I’d be much happier.

  • Erin Moore says:

Is Jesus sitting on the cross picking his toes?

  • lisa says:

Most likely he was thrown down on the cross with little chance to calmly reflect. It was violent, violent, violent. Attempts to soften the crucifixion seem to defeat the purpose of God allowing man to treat Him most despicably for the sake of humanity. I’d love to see a depiction of the fear and horror the human side of Jesus must have felt. I guess the Passion of the Christ did this somewhat. But by the time I got there I already had such a raging case of PTSD I don’t think my brain could take any more.

  • It seems that you’re just rehashing what http://jesusoftheweek.com/ has been doing for years. With that said, it looks like Jesus here is shaving his legs. Gotta have smooth legs when people are looking up at you. Right?

  • This is how you sit when you’re about to paint your toenails for a night on the town in Nazerath. The clubs there are the jam.

No offense to the actual artist, but I am pretty sure I’ve seen this painting on black velvet.

  • Blair says:

Prior to coming to church and becoming a believer, the artist who created this picture designed T-shirts. His most famous work, of course, involved wolves and the moon. See the link below for his best shirt *ever*. Don’t forget to read the reviews! 🙂

Man, this is a brutal audience. Mockery is my primary love language but I kept wincing (to be honest, mirthfully–that is not Elmer Fudd saying mercyfully)for the artist.
Kidding aside, I do feel kinda queasy/guilty for verging on taking lightly the subject of the painting. .

  • That’s funny. I wouldnt know about painting nails though.

I never knew Jesus had 6 pack abs.

Yeah…I guess I’m biased because I’m an artist…but I think this artist is getting criticized really heavily. I agree with MPT that this guy has skills. I disagree with the other criticism, though, and I feel that this guy might have been lumped in with other ‘stock art’ pictures.
This artistic rendering of Jesus is not nearly as much historical as it is personal. I see this as Jesus’ place in this artist’s life at this time.
I mean look at it again: The darkness surrounding Jesus and the pain on his back, but yet he is calm and he is strong despite it (hence the muscles).
    And I dont think it’s a moon behind him..I think it’s divinity.
I could be wrong, but its my observation.

  • Saskia says:

So for you art is only worthwhile if it depicts a historical event? Good luck looking at the majority of the world’s paintings.

  • PC says:

it would appear to me he is picking out a splinter. Darn crosses and their slivers.

  • OK so it does look like it belongs on the side of an old 70’s van.

As an artist to really paint the crucifixion would be to paint the most beautiful yet horrific moment in human history I’m not sure that a human or canvas could ever capture that.
