  • I know how this will make me sound, I am not attempting to be a legalist or moralist and I understand that it’s his freedom as an artist to express his opinions and vision in any way he wants, but…

Not seeing why the language needs to be the way. I like the beat, I love the message, but why cuss? Derek Webb holds alot of clout with alot of people, and why offend the people you are trying to change for the wrong reasons? This message of the track in offensive in a good way, it calls the church to care about the things we should care about, but when you add words that will offend all by themselves that is all people may focus on.

I dunno, for me, I usually let out teens listen to some Derek Webb, sadly, I won’t endorse this.

This is reminicsent of a famous sermon by Tony Campolo…where he blurted out a cuss word in his sermon…and followed with (paraphrase) “and people are dying and suffering all around you and all you care about is that I used a cussword”.

Wow is right… Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

Wow – I’ve always loved his lyrics, but this is more cutting edge musically than he has been.

Love the message most of all, as usual. Why the language? To make a point. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with this – scripture is filled with strongly-worded oaths that were likely the equivalent of swear words in their own day. When they are used to make a convicting point as they are here, it’s practically biblical..

    That’s my two cents.

I was kind of hoping the “Derek swears!” thing would be a little more worthwhile — if you’re going to go to war with your label hope you’d do a whole lot more than just steal a line from Tony Campolo.

I like Derek a lot, and happily purchased his last CD and will do so again — profanity or not. Still, after hearing two months worth of how “important” this is and how much it was necessary to keep this word in the song he kind of just mails it in with that line. Homosexuality? A big issue with Christians ignoring Christ’s command to love and die to oneself on one extreme and ignoring the Bible’s teachings on the other. However the sentiment “How can we discuss homosexuality when people are dying!” doesn’t really lead to better conversation about the issue, it seems just to shout it down completely. The line seems tacked on.

I love Derek, and I disagree with him on this one. “Spirit vs. The Kick Drum” is a much better song, and musically less like a B-side from the 80s.

  • I like it. Musically it’s catchy, lyrically it’s deep and it’s trendy to be against everything “Church”. I don’t mind the language. That to is very “in” right now. He’s the Cold Play of X-Christian musicians. Every generation has to have their own U2 🙂
