new christmas music

By October 20, 2008Blog

I love Christmas music. I’m one of those freaks who begins listening to certain Christmas records right about the first day of fall. I hear emotion in Christmas songs that I don’t hear in other music. Only rarely do I enjoy a “new” Christmas song. “Breath of Heaven” is definitely one song I think might stand the test of time. Anyway, here’s two new ones worth checking out…

It’s nice that Sixpence None the Richer is making music together again, but I must admit: I think it’s odd that they decided to release a Christmas album, considering Leigh just released a solo Christmas EP last year. But since they did, I decided to give it a listen, and while this isn’t Matt and Leigh’s best effort, there’s certainly a few gems on The Dawn of Grace you might consider downloading. The best: “Silent Night,” a hauntingly beautiful duet between Leigh and Dan Haseltine of Jars of Clay. The worst: “Christmas Island,” a terrible Jimmy Buffet holiday cover song.

I’m a huge fan of Sara Groves. I think she’s one of few true artists left in Christian music. Not only is she a passionate songwriter, but her vocals are intricate and beautifully imperfect. And that’s a good thing. I’ve only been able to hear a couple songs off this record, but what I’ve heard is stellar. It’s out today, so make sure you give it a listen at iTunes.

Well, Matthew… had I known you were into beautifully IMPERFECT voices I would’ve sent you a recording of Breath of Heaven that I used to sing every Christmas. 🙂
But I think your idea of imperfect and mine might be on two very different levels…

I’ll have to go check out Sara Groves. I don’t know much about her but am always looking for new music. Thanks for the tip.

Hey, what did you think about Pete’s internet worship idea today? Would love to know your opinion…

The song “Christmas Island” is sung by the Andrew Sisters, Leon Redbone, Petty Booka and others before (and after) Jimmy Buffett. The restaurant I work in (Maggiano’s Little Italy) has the Andrew Sisters version in heavy rotation from the day after Thanksgiving until New Years and it is probably the Maggiano’s Christmas song I hate the most. Thank you MPT for bringing that dreaded song back to my memory.

Hi, Matthew, been reading your blog for about six weeks now, since I found Jessica’s blog off Angie’s. Just wanted to make a quick comment that I agree, “Breath of Heaven” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. My mom is a singer and she used to sing it every Christmas at a special service we have. It gives me chills whenever I hear it. 🙂

I was so excited a couple weeks ago to see Sarah Groves had released a Christmas CD! I already ordered it!
By chance did you get an opportunity to attend Art*Music*Justice?
Oh – and really, don’t get me started on “Christian” music……

    Hey!
Have you heard Andrew Peterson’s, Behold the Lamb of God?
I think it is an amazing Christmas album.
There are no traditional songs on it…. but the CD covers the story of, and leading up to Christ’s birth.
    wonderful music.

    Hi Matthew-
I have to agree about Sara Groves and her music – I checked out one of her older cds the other day and I kept listening to it over and over again – she is a good singer and song writer – another CHRISTmas album I want to get is Casting Crowns – have you heard their song “While you where sleeping?” It stopps and makes you think – I am a CHRISTmas music junkie – but don’t start to listen till after THANKSGIVING…..

    Later man!
    Daniel
