my collide magazine column

By July 15, 2008Blog

For those of you who are new to my blog, you might not know this: I’m a writer. I write books mostly. But once in a while, I also write columns or essays for a magazine or two. The following is a silly little column about “blogs” that I wrote for Collide Magazine.

A Mixed Tape: These Are A Few of My Favorite Blogs

I’m one of those people who love reading blogs. That’s the truth. Few things excite me more than finding a new URL to pique my interest a couple times a week. My affection for the blogosphere began when I started blogging in 2006. Today, reading the opinions, stories, nonsensical humor, and spiritual journeys of random people, celebrities, pastors, and friends is an avid part of my morning routine, like watching The Today Show or popping Zantac.

As you might know, a lot of content on blogs is hit or miss. But I think that’s especially true for those of us who publish posts that focus on the various aspects of Jesus, faith, church, and theology. We Christians aren’t the most interesting people on the planet. Sometimes reading a Christian’s daily thoughts about God is about as enjoyable as reading Leviticus on vacation. You know it’s true. I’ve long believed that blogs are sort of like opinions: You probably have one, and more than likely, it stinks.

But among the millions of blogs from Christians like you and me, I have discovered a select few that are actually worthy of being bookmarked. That’s true for British theologian Peter Rollins’ online pontifications. While some of the author’s readership think he’s little more than a controversial blowhard who wouldn’t know Jesus if he was sticking his fingers through the holes in his hands, the majority of Rollins’ readers think his views about the kingdom of God bring much-needed magic to their stale evangelical/emergent worlds. Sure, his blog might tick you off, but I tend to think every good blog should.

Adding a little controversy when blogging always makes for a more interesting read, and Christian sex guru Robert Irwin integrates a little provocative flare into his daily ramblings with near perfection. Even the most open-minded believer might blush while reading some of Irwin’s more arousing posts. But the author knows what he’s talking about when it comes to sex, so most of the time you’ll learn a thing or two.

Many of my favorite blogs are those of experts. Whether I’m reading Seth Godin’s marketing advice, Brett McCracken’s opinions about movies and culture, Chip MacGregor’s entertaining journals about how to break into the publishing world or Maggi Dawn’s reflections about Jesus and the spiritual journey, the best (and most successful) bloggers always build their content around the topic they know the most about.

For most bloggers, “me” tends to be their expertise. And as you probably know, “me” sells in certain instances. Somebody’s personal blog can sometimes be very interesting, like standing outside somebody’s bedroom window and peeking through the curtains. Bloggers who cyber flash their readers don’t have to be famous or even decent writers; they just have to be willing to share too much information on a regular basis. Which is what we blog readers live for! “Too much information” is like crack cocaine to the Internet stalker in all of us. I love following the Hollywood-esque lifestyle of photographer Jeremy Cowart, the daily antics of writer Anne Jackson, and the oddities and thoughts of my pastor Pete Wilson. It doesn’t matter that I’ve never met any of Jason Boyett’s children; I still want to know how their birthday parties went. And just because I haven’t listened to my Shaun Groves albums since 2002, that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in what’s currently got him excited or irritated about the world. Even my wife’s scrapbooking blog woos me from time to time.

So whether you’re well-known and have a lot to say like Brian McLaren or a “nobody” who attends seminary like Joshua Longbrake, if you’ve got something interesting to say, I’m more than willing to spend a few minutes of my morning reading your blog. Heck, if I really like it, I might add your URL to my personal blogroll or sign up for your RSS feed. Which of course means your blog doesn’t stink! Though your opinions still might.

So, what are a few of your favorite blogs?

Viagra is for the treatment of inability to get or keep an erection and similar states when hard-on is of low quality. When you buy remedies like cialis from canada you should know about cialis online canada. It may have a lot of brands, but only one ATC Code. Erectile disfunction, defined as the persistent impossibility to maintain a satisfactory erection, affects an estimated 15 to 30 millions men in the America alone. Sexual heartiness is an substantial part of a man’s life, no matter his age etc.

I have loved blogs for a long time, but didn’t start one for quite awhile because I’m not really an “expert” in anything and didn’t really think anyone would read it. But I was a writer in a former life, before disability hit, and part of me just needed a challenge. So I started a blog and just tried to form a story every day. Not a journal of my daily life but stories of my life and thoughts I wanted to write about.

While mine didn’t set out to be a Christian blog, exactly… it’s impossible to say what I’m thinking without my faith being involved most of the time. So I find it a nice way to hopefully be a little entertaining and show your faith can be an intregal part of everything.

    Other blogs I love are:
    http://thepioneerwoman.com/
    http://audreycaroline.blogspot.com/
    http://aliedwards.typepad.com/
    as well as many others.

I found your blog from Angie, but will definitely be tuning in from here on out 🙂

  • I love reading blogs as well. I just signed up with google reader and have fallen in love with it. Your blog is on my rss feed there as well as many others. Feel free to stop by my blog if you have time. it’s http://bfalexander.com. I am a 19 year old college student trying to survive college..and life.

  • What a great topic! – I’ll have go through all your links …

To add my own “favs”, or those I always read first …

A dear friend lost her husband recently to cancer, and has kept a blog through the journey. While sad, it is a wonderful testimony to the power of His Presence. It has been uplifting & encouraging to know that in Christ alone we are renewed.
    http://margiefawcett.blogspot.com/

Another friend from our former church leads their prayer ministry & I’ve learned a ton about how to pray for myself & others, as well as the grace and gift it is to have a God that longs to dialog with us.
    http://healingprayerministry.blogspot.com/

And whenever I feel the “bubble” of christendom, I turn to PostSecret – they post postcards people have sent in anonymously with their deepest held secrets. As a Christian, I find it a helpful reminder to be aware that those I meet may also be hiding deep pains that need Christ’s touch.

Me: The bulk of my blog is books I am reading: practical theology, renewing of ancient christian practices, community, hospitality, etc…

Well you are … and the Edventures! He’s always going someplace else. I love Bob – cause he’s an excellent photographer.
No one ever leaves me comment – well hardly ever – unless they’re selling something … 🙂 So I’m one of those boring ones. If I want to be less – it’ll COST me TOO MUCH – emotionally to hang meself out there – you know what I mean! 🙂

Obviously Angie Smith’s blog is one of my favorites. She is so DEEP and so raw and open, something I appreciate in anyone!

Most of the blogs I follow have to do with miscarriage, child loss, or pregnancy and motherhood. And of course my blog is sooooooo totally cool and awesome!

I’m so checking out the sex guy’s blog (Robert Irwin)! Thanks!

I love blogs about other families…especially families with special needs children. Or who have experienced loss. I found you guys through Angie Smith. I think you have done a great job helping everyone meet Elias! Stop by one morning…your mornings sound like mine! Little of Meredith and Matt while we eat, followed my blog reading and email catching up while the kids play. (You will add that you have learned that the best “play time” for your kids is just after meal time. Or maybe you already figured out that babies/kids are most happy/sleepy just after eating/nursing!) My hubby can sympathize with sharing problem you mentioned!

  • I’ve just noticed that you and Jessica have personalized blogs, did you do that yourself? I’d be interested in knowing. I’m seeing that more and more! Thanks, Emily

And since you mentioned your wife has a scrapbooking blog, I’ll be checking that out too! 😀

I found you through Angie’s blog. I found hers through somebody else’s – can’t remember who. I’m a blog-addict, so could have been anybody.

Well I have been new to this whole blog thing. I got hooked unfortunately it was when little Audrey died and I was so curious.
I had never seen a blog before- I know I am one of those 40 year olds who kids know more about every electronic in my house than I do. Even the 8 year old. Pretty sad. HA HA HA

Anyway I realy have enjoyed your wife’s blog because it was just so cool to walk thru every experience with her- building anticipation on Elias’s arrival. Hearing all the funny stories and videos.
What a blessing you all have been.
How courageous to put yourself outhere as a witness for Christ and to be so raw and open.
    Kudos to you all.
I was thinking baout starting my own blog on my experience of placing my daughter 23 years ago up for adoption. I am sure there are people who could use some encouragement and would be touched by my story which ultimately was and is for His GLORY!!! AMEN!!!
Anyway thanks for all the helpful infoprmation.
Give hugs to Jess and the baby.
    Love Michele Stewart

  • Well, my blog is from the perspective of a Mom of teens…I started it so my Mom in Cleveland, TN could keep up with my teen girls. However, she never seems to read it anymore!
I found Jessica’s blog through Angie’s then found my way to yours and have really enjoyed it! I wish we had the internet when I was expecting ours – the first one was delivered in Germany and did not meet either of our parents or siblings until she was over 5 mo old!
Okay, so I’m a bit chatty!!!

I am definately going to print this post and comments, so I can go through them all. I am a writer, and the name of my blog is truth and transparency, because that is just who I am. My blog is posted on my home page at http://www.kathypride.com and I blog about everything from how I eat chocolate cake to weaving God into my life in practical ways, to an honest family log. My readers tell me it makes them laugh and feel normal! I am still/was a childbirth educator for over 20 years, so really valued how you guys included us in the pregnancy and especially the labor.
I need to find the exact link, but readers of ANgie’s blog will probably really value Jenn’s insights at sixdayswithtyler.blogspot.com. Jenn and Mike gave birth to a baby boy after infertility cyle after cyle at 23 weeks and he died six days later the day after Christmas. Through it all their faith has remained steadfast.

    Peace,Kathy

I have a blog and I don’t know how worth reading it is, but I don’t really write to have people read. I just live and write, so I don’t forget how. To write, I mean. I don’t think I will forget how to live.

I enjoy your blog. I don’t think anyone has mentioned Brody Harper’s blog, but I read that at: http://brodyharper.com/
