do people still say crunk?

By June 10, 2008Blog

I haven’t heard anybody say “crunk” in a very long time. But I bet they will be saying it a lot this weekend at the CRUNK-4-CHRIST event. Maybe I’m wrong, but I always thought crunk meant “getting high” or “partying” or “worldly intoxication,” which would certainly make this one Christian convention worth attending possibly. But for some reason I don’t think that’s what this get-together is about.

And I gotta say, doesn’t the use of the number 4 make this event SO MUCH COOLER?

So crunk. Wow. There’s gonna be hip-hop. Rock! And CHOIRS!!!!

Sign me up. I want to get crunk.

I use the word “crunk” multiple times daily.. all in jest of course. Family Force 5 seems to have brought that word into the ‘Christian’ community.

  • there’s a band called “Prayer Kingz” they have a song called “rowdy” or “get rowdy” or something like that.
the lyrics to the entire song are basically “get rowdy oooo get crunk ooo get rowdy oooo get crunk, get rowdy rowdy get crunk for Christ!!”
that might be where they got it from.
At first I thought crunk was a ‘bad’ thing too, so when I heard the song I was like, “wait… what?” I always thought it meant ‘Crazy Drunk’ apparently it doesn’t, with some careful research (aka google) I found it’s actually a sub-genre of rap music popularized in the dirty south. (possibly why Family Force Five uses it since their “momma raised them in the dirty south”
    😀

Uh, they are going to get high in Christ. Duh =)

If I was going to use the word crunk. it would for sure be about choirs.

    for example:

The Choir got crunk last sunday singing “For Every Mountain”.

    or

Those poly-blend choir robes make me want to get Crunk4Jesus.

and the use of numbers for words? genius move.

  • This is just as bad as DC Talk “rapping”(that’s what they thought they were doing at least) about Jesus!

  • jamie says:

the great thing is that these guys are trying. the trying that they’re doing might be a little cheesy as well as irrelevant to the society and culture, but God has used dumber things to bring people to Himself!

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men
    on whom his favor rests.”
    Luke 2:14
(this verse just came to mind as I was writing my comment)

  • that is true. Dumber things have been used, but at least K-Love remains “positive and encouraging”

  • Ahna says:

My mom’s a midwife in rural Georgia, and she had a lady who called the beginning symptoms of labor “gettin’ crunk.” Now doesn’t THAT put a whole different spin on the matter? Ha! 🙂

  • Jessica says:

I have never heard the word crunk in my life. Leave it to a Christian conference 🙂

Actually, you don’t say “I wanna get crunk,” it’s more like a verb “to crunk.” It was a a kind of dance several years back, but there was a teen movie that recently made that kind of dancing cool again — it was “Bring it On 2” or something like that with Kirsten Dunst — I can’t remember which one exactly, but it really did make the whole crunk dancing scene popular with the young, cool, crowd again — referring in that group to the dance style, NO drug inferences.

  • you’re wrong about that, anonymous… Mary J. Blige says, “Let’s get crunk cuz Mary’s back” in “Family Affair.” It might be both, but it’s not one way or the other.

  • Wait…is that for real? I had to hop over to my rap dict:
    http://www.rapdict.org/Crunk

    My favorite part:

    “Crunk in the church, yes!!”

I wonder why this event was free? Did you go? Sounds like great book fodder. 🙂

Whoah, back off the deffensive — I was telling you that there was a cool wave recently among the kids and the movie is really hip and that brought that dance move back to the A List — I wasn’t talking about what MJB or any others were talking about or the drug inferences.

I actually LOVE the crunk dancing concept (white girl from NYC!) — it’s a bizarre mix of hip hop/ and almost like therapy.

If you watch kids from the ghetto, with tons of angst to release — it’s really cool, and the most progressive way so far.

  • not being defensive. was just pointing it out that the word is used several different ways… that’s all… 🙂

I say crunk all the time…

…of course, it’s never anything but ironic. Take that as you will.
