new zealand church launches controversial billboard campaign

By December 17, 2009Blog

A church named St. Matthew in the City erected THIS billboard for the holidays.
Fa la la la la la la la…

And of course, some people aren’t happy, mainly New Zealand’s Catholics. The Kiwi nuns took one look at this billboard and immediately their habits wadded up. And there’s a myriad of reasons why Catholics might be upset.

For starters…
-Mary’s wearing her holy blue headdress.
-Holy Mary is in bed with her husband!
-It’s not clear whether or not Joseph used a condom.
-The photo is supposed to convey Mary as unimpressed with her husband’s bedroom routine; however, Joseph appears just as dissatisfied as Mary, which implies Mary may have actually been human. I love Catholics, but some Catholics do forget that she was flesh and blood.
-And then there’s the whole implication that God is good… (conclude that sentence the same way you conclude the fortune in a fortune cookie.)

The billboard is certainly controversial, and probably not the savviest manner in which to attract New Zealand’s large non-Christian population into a relationship with St. Matthew’s in the City, but the depiction does make one think happy Holidays or something like that.

What do you think?
