Christians in Alabama use Hitler quote on billboard to promote children’s ministry

This is real. I can hardly believe that anybody would be so dumb. But somebody was/is. I mean, what were they thinking, using Adolf Hitler’s words to promote their Christian children’s ministry… I mean, seriously. Even if it wasn’t a quote by Hitler, the message is still a frightening and gross proclamation, hardly something that Christians should celebrate as their personal mission.

Thankfully, the ministry is pulling the billboard: “We are pulling the billboard and certainly never intended to cause confusion. … Herbert Hoover would have been a far better one to quote when he said, ‘Children are our most valuable resource,'” founder James Anderegg told the Ledger-Enquirer. “We are a children’s organization and had honorable intentions and nothing less.” SOURCE

I will start by saying I do not agree with this theology/viewpoint/idiocy in any way.  If that was my kid in that stock photo they used, someone’s head would roll.  I do get that the intent was likely to be a cautionary tale about what happens if people allow the government too much control over children.  However, it is terribly insensitive and obtuse to use a Hitler quote in this way and in this venue even if you expected other people to get it. Some things require context and this has none. For most people, it just looks like a quote from Hitler, almost universally recognized by reasonable people as the biggest monster in recent history and maybe ever, being used as a guiding principle for the church. It’s just irresponsible and, not to just oversimplify, unbelievably stupid.

  • Wow, can’t imagine what message they were trying to convey! Are they saying that God uses the same approach as Hitler?

I find the comma splice just about equally offensive as the Hitler quote here. I’m so disturbed I don’t even know what to be upset about.

Yeah most people view a billboard as they’re driving by.  Not the time for compare and contrast exercises.

Probably they wanted to create the impression that if WE (the good guys) don’t mold our kids, then the bad guys will.
