How disgusting. The POINT God makes, and Jesus makes, about giving is to make GOD our priority – to put Him above everything else. In our family, no matter what happens, we give to God – if our car breaks down, we still give. If the roof needs replacing, we still give. If my husband (who is self-employed) doesn’t get money for a month or two, we still give. It’s just something we do. HOWEVER, we DO NOT judge or worry about anyone who DOESN’T GIVE. No one, and I mean NO ONE, knows what another individual or family might be facing, so NONE OF US are in a position to comment on someone else’s giving. I would NEVER attend a church that posted a sign like this. When you make MONEY your priority, God is NOT.

First let me say I don’t agree with the sign…while I believe we are commanded to tithe. I personally believe I am to broke, not to tithe. I am not exactly sure how God does math but I know at the end of each month He provides for my family over and over again and there are times when I am left scratching my head.
Now that that is out of the way let me get to the point.
Why do we feel the need to make a public spectacle of all of the ways the church gets it wrong. Why not make blog posts of some of the amazing things the church is doing in our world today. I am much more apt to aspire to getting it right because of the great things people are doing. Then to just steer clear of getting wrong for fear of landing on a blog like this. I want to inspire people to be the church! I don’t want to say publicly, “Hey look at how ugly the bride of Christ is. Aren’t you glad your not part of this group of idiots.” While we should be able to laugh at ourselves, I think much of this crosses the line. Jesus is coming back one day for His bride. I want to be someone who has stood by Her to hold Her up and make Her beautiful, not hurl mud at her face.
I am drawn back to this passage in Matthew where Jesus speaks about the church…

THE CHURCH is the only thing that is backed by Jesus himself. Not government, business, social media, currency…and the list goes on but, you get the point. I said publicly on several occasions that I would never work for the church (my mistake saying it out loud), a couple of years ago The Lord called me to work at a church. While we don’t always get it right I am proud to be part of a body of believers that knows we are not perfect. We are doing our best trying to follow Jesus and hold Him up before our community in as many ways possible both in word and deed. The Lord called me to stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution. It is hard at some points, but I know I am where the Lord has called me for this season. Let’s build Her up, not tear Her down. I Love Jesus, I love people, and I love The Church!
It doesn’t have to be one or the other. You can post the good and honorable things that churches and individuals are doing (something like say… World Vision) and you can still call out the church for its hypocrisy and spiritual abuse. No good ever comes from trying to keep all the flaws hidden, ask the Catholics.
Perhaps the issue is how many people who end up on this board of shame are hurt beyond words by the church’s actions? I think the church needs to be called out on this. This is horrendous abuse of power and authority.
Second the people who are hurt or have been hurt by the church need to hear Christians lamenting these acts of abuse publicly. They need to know they are not alone. They need to know we are not supporting this type of abuse.
When there are acts of terror, we proclaim we need to hear the Muslim world denounce the act of terror and proclaim how evil the act was. Perhaps it is on websites here we are publicly proclaiming to the world we don’t see these acts to be Christ like acts.
