FLASHBACK: POP CULTURE ‘JESUS’ in 1990…

In 1990, the big news involved Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, DC’s Marion Barry’s drug possession arrest, free elections in East Germany, and the first war in Iraq. But what was going on with America’s Jesus twenty years ago? For some of you, this post will be a flashback to what was. And for others, this post will be an introduction to “Jesus,” circa 1990.

Street preaching was hot, at least, it was in North Carolina. The Strode family preachers made news on CNN.

Max Lucado released his first book. The subject matter? Clapping angels. But people were interested in the topic. The book went on to become a Christian best seller that year.
 
Aretha Franklin released a record/cassette of hymns and inspirational songs called “Amazing Grace.”
Bro. David Barbados preached about fornication… 


Petra released this music video for “Armed and Dangerous” from their record Beyond Belief.

 
Twila Paris released her critically acclaimed record “Cry For the Desert.” When my mother saw the cover of this album, she said, “She looks like a demon.” 
 
Michael W. Smith released “Go West Young Man,” and attempted to rap for the first time on the song “Love Crusade.” 
 
Man-band 4HIM debuted their poppy Jesus songs.
