I first learned about this news item at UnreasonableFaith.com.
On the evening of February 8, South African and born-again Christian Hettie Brittz was raped by a burglar.
When Hettie shared about her horrific experience with media, she was smiling (almost giddy) as she shared with a reporter how God had informed her that she was going to be raped.
Whaaaaaaa?! God told her she was going to be raped?!
Actually, here’s how the horrific event is described in the article:
Her husband was still working when the robbers stormed into their house on Monday evening. They took him to the bedroom where Hettie was already in bed.
In the room, Louis told her “in the name of Jesus” (and in English so that the robbers would understand), that the men would take their things but not hurt them.
They were forced to lie on the floor where Louis told Hettie that if this was the end, they would see each other again in heaven.
Later the robbers took him away. One stayed with Hettie where she lay with her hands tied, half under the bed.
She said while she was lying like this, she heard the Lord tell her: “Hettie, you are my bride”.
She answered: “Yes, Jesus, I know.”
She said the Lord then told her that the man would rape her but not hurt her. The rapist was also not violent.
Uh, first of all, I would say that rape “hurts” and is also “violent.” I’m grateful the man didn’t kill her, but he did harm her and committed a violent act toward her.
ODD SIDE NOTE: What’s strange is that I’ve actually spoken on the phone with Hettie’s husband Louis. In South Africa, Louis is a well-known worship leader, and while working at CCM Magazine, we either did a short story on him or considered doing a story on him. (I can’t remember exactly.) But he and I spoke a couple times.
Okay, so I don’t know what to think about this story. I’m still letting it sink in. It’s not that I don’t believe Hettie’s claim that God told her she was going to be raped. But suggesting such a thing raises a number of questions (for me, at least).
Daniel over at Unreasonable Faith asks one of those questions when he writes, too bad Jesus didn’t tell her [about the rape] an hour earlier.
That’s sort what I was thinking.
Hettie and Louis’s response also lends itself to the whole “anything to bring glory to God” theology, as if God would use rape to for his good.
Ugh.
That’s hard for me believe.
Regardless, my thoughts and prayers go out to Hettie and Louis and also their families as they walk through this difficult time.
