sometimes a picture is worth a thousands misleading words…

By February 21, 2010Blog

Poor Tiger. Since his media-sized apology on Friday, this photo of him kissing his mother on the lips has been circulating around the Internet. I saw the photo of the “kiss” before I saw the video footage. By the looks of the photo, one might assume that right after Tiger apologized to the Galaxy for cheating on his wife, he and his mom decided to make out in front of the cameras. The blog world is loaded with assumptions, theories, and punch lines about the image.

But the truth is, the “kiss” lasted for a split second and followed a long, gracious embrace. It was actually a sweet moment of a mother’s unconditional love and support. It didn’t seem icky at all.

Now, I haven’t kissed my mother on the lips since I stopped sleeping with Clowny, a handmade stuffed clown that I carried everywhere until I entered first grade. But some sons do share that kind of affection with their moms. My guess is that it all depends on how one is raised.

When I first saw the photo, I admit, I thought it looked a little weird, out of place for a media event of this kind, and yes, a little icky. But with context, a video revealing Tiger’s entire interaction with his mom, my thoughts changed.

Once again, I was reminded that…

1) Before I make an opinion, context is always important.

2) Don’t believe everything I see and read on a blog. (And that includes this one.)

3) A picture might be worth a 1000 words, and sometimes it might be worth a 1000 misleading words. Never assume.
