Paige Crutcher from Examiner.com interviewed me. Here’s part of our conversation. Read the entire interview here.
PC: Do you believe that you have to be fearless to write non-fiction? To be open to the knowledge that people are going to read the most intimate moments from your life?
MPT: No. If this were true, I wouldn’t be writing non-fiction. Even I believe the act of writing down my story and memories has helped me become less afraid, I still have many fears and insecurities I’m working through.
PC: What drives you? Is it being able to reach and help others who have shared experiences like yours? Does it go beyond that to being an innate need?
MPT: I love writing because I love the “connection” that sometimes happens through story. I’m driven by that and also the power of story.
PC: I think of you as an author, a reporter and a creator of the written word. What about your music? Are you still aspiring to be a musician?
MPT: No. Not really. I do write the occasional song for a friend or family member or special event and I’ve sung at a couple weddings recently, but for the most part, I leave the singing to people who are much more gifted in that area than I am.
PC: Why do you think there is so much judgment associated with Christianity?
MPT: Have you read the history of Christianity? 🙂 It’s pretty ugly at times. And for many segments of the population, it still is ugly.
PC: HEAR NO EVIL shares your experiences with it and your struggle to understand those who judge. Do you ever feel yourself judging those who judge others?
MPT: Oh, sure. I’m guilty of judging those who judge. Those times usually occur when I witness someone or a bunch of someones using their influence to exclude people from God’s story. As somebody who once wasted time and energy pushing people out of God’s story, I become very frustrated when I see it happening now. In today’s culture, it’s sometimes very difficult for any of us to discover God’s grace in life, but when you’re being excluded or pushed out of the story by somebody else, it can make the journey that much harder. And I think that’s wrong.
PC: Can it become an interloping figure eight, trying to wrap your mind around it while letting go?
MPT: Sometimes. But you know, that happens only when I take myself too seriously. And once in a while, I do think more highly of myself than I ought to. But eventually, humility comes along and knocks me down.
PC: There are so many uplifting messages in HEAR NO EVIL. The main messages I took away were hope, acceptance and believing in yourself. Is there a message that you want readers to grasp?
MPT: The lesson I learned while writing this book is to remember to “look in the mirror.” Seeing your own reflection can be difficult, but before one can experience growth, hope, and unity, I think it’s an ongoing requirement.
