i can never understand why praise bands do crap like this. just book a lame festival or local coffee shop gig and play cover songs. rock out. enjoy your coolness. this has no place in church (in my opinion). just don’t understand it. what’s the point? to feel cool or seem relevant? if that’s the case…yikes.
I’ve never understood how covering secular songs makes a church “relevant.” It always makes me wish I weren’t at church watching a tribute band but was actually at the real thing.
I’m like most. I just don’t get it. It’s like a pastor saying, “I just want to start a church that is relevant.” That line was used 15 years ago – and we still keep repeating it. Relevance might have just become the new traditional.
when they broke into Coldplay I found myself visibly cringing. And that the Asian dude was pounding on his guitar to the beat with his fist and I realized that I do that sometimes and then cringed at myself.
I always enjoy churches that open with a secular tune (think North Point in Atlanta). I think it is a good attention grabber. There is certainly a need to find a good secular song that ties into the message. Most worship music today is too redundant. I’d rather worship to U2 or The Fray any day.
I will say that this particular band is trying way too hard.
I will say this. There are many songs that are secularly produced that strike a very spiritual cord. I think of the song “The Reason” as an example. I also think that for making a point secular songs can be used to bring a different spin through a performance or a track that augments a video intro.
This though…. hmmmm without knowing what proceeded and followed… I cannot pass an adequate judgement but on the surface this is very disturbing. Worship is about pointing to the throne and there is nothing in that that I saw.
There were probably doing this as part of a series or something. I don’t think they are just doing it for entertainment value. Besides, they are pretty talented. I would say this church is cool. Not that cool is what church is supposed to be, but if that is their goal, they have reached it.
um, I think I puked in my mouth a lil’ bit….not my scene nor my bag. would have been years ago when I was doing the whole Purpose Driven Church in a Bag deal with Saddleback Joe, but then I moved on.
I’m all for relevant…and I do think there is a time and a place for secular music in worship (imo, most secular artists have an element of spirit in their lyrics if you take the time to listen…..just cause they aren’t “Christian” artists doesn’t mean they have no faith), but these guys were trying way too hard.
And to answer your question? I do go to a cool church….one that “gets it” without trying too hard. But to you (or him or her or them) it may not be cool at all….
Looks like they were doing this before the actual service (judging by the countdown at the top of the screen). That being said, I agree with what one commenter said, “this particular band is trying way too hard”.
Symptoms: -not being good enough/smart enough/lucky enough to actually become a real rock star -obsessive reliance on popular rock songs/”cool” clothing for street cred -leading a praise and worship band like you’re Bono
This is Quest Community Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Like others guessed this was just a fun performance before the actual worship songs and praise. The series was called “My Generation” and it dealt with the culture and issues from the ’70s-to the present. Each week the worship team would do a prelude of the hits from that generation.
Once the fun and flashy stuff is done Quest really digs deep into the word of God. Check out a service for yourself. http://www.questcommunity.com/
One of Quests mottos is that we are a church for people who don’t like “church” Skip the ties and the fake smiles. When you come through the doors here you will be genuinely welcomed no matter who you are or what you have done. We are an Acts 2 type of church…stick to the core values of what a church is supposed to do – teach as many people as possible about Christ.
Laugh at the band if you want but they pour their heart into what they do and it all comes together to help get the point across.
We are definitly not the church for everyone…we are the church for everyone else…not to mention, one of the fastest growing churches in the country.
This is all wrong. They don’t even have a token black guy to do some suburban-friendly rapping. Get with the spiritual program, guys!
ummm….wow…I have no words…oh wait, yes I do.
Is this a concert at a church, or is it church service? If I were 20 something and this was just a fun service, I might like it.
But I’m over 40 and usually go to church for church.
BTW your linkwithin is linking with pics of Michael Jackson, George Bush, The Pope, and Sexed. I don’t think the video brought that much.
man i guess my church isnt cool enough for top 40 praise? music? how does a pastor follow that up, probably a lot better.
Um…I’m confused.
I’m holding out until they play “Freebird.’ Then I’ll hold up my lighter.

That made my eyes burn.
cant have a cool church with Coldplay.

Apparently all the good music does belong to the devil.

“visibly cringing” as opposed to non-visible cringing.
i’m an idiot.

ok, off to brush my teeth and take a shower.

It’s all relative, right?

Definitely, not my bag.
Sweet mother this is insane….I think I would just have to leave and never come back if this happened in my church….and Bryans comments were hilarious
