‘churched’ endorsements are coming in…

By July 16, 2008Blog

As a writer, it’s always hard asking established (even “famous”) writers to take a look at your book in hope they will LOVE it and write an endorsement for it. Well, that’s the stage I’m in with churched–asking a bunch of different writers from various backgrounds and genres to take a look at churched. So far, the reaction has been amazing, much better than I could have ever hoped for.

Yesterday, I received an endorsement from author Lisa Samson. And I must tell you: it made my day. Here’s why: Not only is Lisa a fantastic fiction writer (Quaker Summer, Embrace Me, among others) and also award-winning (in fact, just the other night she took home a Christy Award at the International Christian Retail Show), she is a friend. Not a “best friend.” But we’re close enough for me to know that she doesn’t just hand out endorsements because you’re a friend. She has to really like something before she’s willing to put her name on it. Which of course–I love about her. But it’s also scary, too–because you run the risk of getting a phone call or email that might go something like this…

“Uh, Matthew, it’s Lisa. Yeah, so I didn’t like your book. It was boring and not really funny.”

Receiving that phone call would have hurt! But I would have survived. But yesterday, rather than getting any weird phone call or email, I got this…

Finally! A bona-fide humorist in the North American church! I might be tempted to say Matthew Paul Turner is Christendom’s answer to David Sedaris, but Matthew stands on his own without the comparison. A memoirist who doesn’t take himself, or the world, too seriously, but still manages to write profoundly and beautifully, Turner gave me a belly-laugh on almost every page. No navel-gazing here folks. If you grew up believing “being conformed not to this world” meant being the weirdest kid on the block, Churched will be the funniest book you’ve read in years! –Lisa Samson, award-winning author of Quaker Summer, Embrace Me and Justice in the Burbs.

While I tried to stay cool, on the inside I was jumping up and down. Anyway, I’m not really supposed to be sharing my endorsements just yet, but I was just too excited not let this one slip into a post on my blog. 🙂

Also, currently, the book is being sent out to media: from Christianity Today to Playboy. Before churched, I would never have been brave enough to send anything I’ve written to Playboy or Entertainment Weekly (and they still might pan it), or not even give it a second glance… and I’ll have to live with that. However, I’m just excited that my publisher believes enough in this work to give it a chance.

OK, Elias is crying, which means his diaper needs changing or he’s hungry or he’s just woke up from a bad dream about being a child actor on the 80s detective show Jake and the Fat Man. He needs his daddy.

Peace to you all.

Viagra is for the treatment of inability to get or keep an erection and similar states when erection is of low quality. When you buy remedies like cialis from canada you should know about cialis online canada. It may have a lot of brands, but only one ATC Code. Erectile dysfunction, defined as the persistent impossibility to maintain a satisfactory erection, affects an estimated 15 to 30 millions men in the America alone. Sexual health is an substantial part of a man’s life, no question his age etc.

I just found your blog a couple of days ago. I’ve enjoyed getting you know your family so much and love what I’ve read online so today I went to every bookstore in my town in search of any of your books. They were ALL out of stock…..which absolutely means you are an amazing writer! Right? So this afternoon I’ll order some reading material online, which I should have done in the first place.

Our church has a bookstore and I’m going to request that they start carrying your books. Their website is http://twumc.org/resources/bookstore/.

Can’t wait to start reading more of your stuff!

    That picture is precious.
Was that in the hospital or at home?

I look forward to your book.
    Happy Typing!!

    Nice work Man…

    can’t wait to read it.

  • Congrats on the endorsement from Lisa; we roomed together in Nahville at ICRS a couple of years ago. I am really excited for you and think that is great your publisher is behind you on sending out the advance copies. (I hate to ask, but who is publishing CHURCHED?) Humor absolutely needs to have a bigger arena in Christendom. After all, I know at least I refer to God’s tremendous sense of humor all the time.
    Congrats!

Great endorsement! 🙂 David Sedaris – when I used to listen to NPR I used to LOVE his stuff! The one on his Mom going on a macro-biotic diet b’c of some cancer – which would never happen and the quirky relationship w/mom was funny! I’ll have to get your BOOK!
