‘You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16…’ #DuckDynasty

By December 31, 2013Blog

Days after A&E reinstated Phil Robertson to his starring role on Duck Dynasty, another one of Robertson’s preaching videos surfaces. In this latest sermon clip, Robertson shares the “marital wisdom” that he once offered a young man.

“Make sure that she can cook a meal,” he says, “You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road.”

Robertson continues: “They got to where they’re getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em,” Robertson said. “Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks.”

You can watch the sermon clip below.

Some Christians might think Robertson’s folksy bigotry is perfect for reality TV, but is this really the “biblical marriage” that conservative Christians are promoting these days? You know, the kind of Bible-based marriage where there’s lots of freedom of speech, lots of freedom to own guns, and lots of teenage girls getting hitched at 15? Does Robertson’s quote truly reflect America’s “Christian values” today, values that promote objectifying young woman as “potentially good cooks” who boys are encouraged to marry young?

And seriously, would your church leaders really give Phil the freedom to stand behind the pulpit and preach this religious opinion to their congregations?

I hope not.

Viagra is for the treatment of inability to get or keep an erection and similar states when erection is of low quality. When you buy remedies like cialis from canada you should know about cialis online canada. It may have a lot of brands, but only one ATC Code. Erectile malfunction, defined as the persistent impossibility to maintain a satisfactory hard-on, affects an estimated 15 to 30 millions men in the America alone. Sexual health is an substantial part of a man’s life, no question his age etc.

Girls getting married at 15 or 16 is closer to how it would have happened in biblical times. Of course, we don’t do a lot of things the way we did back then, because the world is a different place and stuff.

I guess I am missing the point of this. I thought your post after his insensitive and hurtful comments was spot on, and was ok with whatever A&E decided since there are consequences for our words and actions. I don’t, however, see the point in dredging up old video clips to ring in the New Year with more stale arguments from people on both sides who have already made up their minds about him and the reality tv show.Instead of more divisiveness in the church being highlighted I would love to see your thoughts on a new topic.

Phil aside, there are regions of the U.S. where the median age of marriage is higher or lower: http://www.pewresearch.org/2009/10/15/the-states-of-marriage-and-divorce/

Generally, the younger the age of the bride, the more likely divorce is. Other trends: the youngest average age of first marriage for any state is around 24; the oldest, 30; so getting hitched at 15 is really pushing it (is that even legal?). Americans are waiting longer than ever for their first marriages. And, sadly but predictably, getting married young correlates with cycles of poverty from generation to generation.

One other thing: in some parts of the U.S., the philosophy is that people become adults so they can get married; in other places, people get married so they can become adults.

Lori123 I saw this story in yahoo! news so I don’t think MPT is dredging up an old video. He is presenting a video which has been dredged up by the news media and people are talking about elsewhere.

  • Lori123 says:

Leanne-thanks for the info! I guess I am just burned out in general with the topic and more than that disappointed in the Christians that supported his comments.

  • LeanneZeck says:

Yes, women go rotten with age so if you don’t get a woman while she is still “good” well its impossible to find a godly, single woman over the age of 20.
And I like how he uses a quote from George Washington to prove his point on the Bible allowing people to hunt….his logic is a little off.
I hope his theology has grown since he gave this talk.
As a pastor, I do not believe I would let him behind the pulpit…but then again, since I am a pastor and single female, I doubt he would be found anywhere near my church’s pulpit.

America’s “Christian values”? What the heck are those?

  • LindaMulfingerGeorge says:

TylerJPetty We should probably make a distinction between “biblical times” and “biblical.”

I’m a woman pastor as well.  I think I would allow him to stand in my pulpit so that he could talk himself right out of everyone’s protectiveness.  We only hear the sound bytes the media wants us to hear.  Sometimes it swings to the left…most times to the right here in the south.  I’m talking local media.  So…come on, Phil…show your stuff.

I don’t think Robertson’s speech reflects the zeitgeist of American conservatism today. That being said, there are an awful lot of people out there who will take up the fight for him to say these things, tacitly agreeing with him in the process. He has been given a platform to speak because of his fame, his wealth, and the fact that he carries a Bible. Are Christians really so desperate for a hero that they will use THIS man as their mouthpiece?

I think Phil Robertson needs to just stop talking. As that is not going to happen, people need to just stop listening. As that also is likely not going to happen, people should, at the very least, stop expecting anything that comes out of this man’s mouth to be even remotely intelligent when it relates to anything beyond ducks.

  • LeanneZeck says:

revpt While I wouldn’t mind him revealing his true colors to people, I would rather not use the place where the Good News is proclaimed from to be the place for that occasion. He seems to be doing a good enough job without using my church’s pulpit.

Hi – I actually was speaking tongue in cheek.  To be truthful, literally – I wish he would go away.  He’s had more than his 15 minutes of fame.
